Occupational Therapist – Double-Handed Care Team Specialism: Double-Handed Care Team
Location: Brent, UK
Salary: £32–£35 per hour
Contract Type: Ongoing
Hours: Full Time
Working Pattern: Hybrid working available
Start Date: ASAP

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Occupational Therapist to join Brent’s dedicated Double-Handed Project Team.

This innovative and progressive service focuses on reviewing and reducing double-handed care packages where appropriate, supporting the transition to safe, person-centred single-handed care. The role is ideal for an OT with strong clinical reasoning, excellent manual handling knowledge, and a commitment to promoting independence and dignity.

Working in collaboration with social workers, care agencies, and multidisciplinary partners, you will lead on complex reviews to ensure care is delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with least restrictive practice principles—while also contributing to sustainable cost savings across the service.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Undertake comprehensive functional assessments to identify abilities, support needs, and opportunities for safe single-handed care.
  • Apply advanced manual handling expertise to prescribe, demonstrate, and implement suitable moving and handling equipment, assistive technology, and environmental adaptations.
  • Collaborate with social workers, care providers, and care coordinators to plan, trial, and implement reductions from double- to single-handed care.
  • Provide expert training, advice, and risk management guidance to carers, families, and support staff in safe handling techniques and equipment use.
  • Ensure all interventions follow least restrictive practice principles, promoting independence, dignity, and safety.
  • Review, redesign, and rationalise care packages to deliver sustainable cost savings without compromising quality.
  • Prepare clear, evidence-based clinical reports, risk assessments, and professional recommendations.
  • Monitor outcomes and complete follow-up reviews to ensure interventions remain safe and effective.
  • Liaise with DFG teams, reablement services, and equipment providers to support holistic and person-centred planning.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date clinical documentation in line with HCPC standards and organisational requirements.
About You
You will be a qualified, HCPC-registered Occupational Therapist with strong experience in community practice, rehabilitation, and manual handling. You will be confident working autonomously on complex cases, applying sound clinical reasoning and working closely with multidisciplinary partners.

Essential Skills & Qualities:
  • Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience in manual handling and equipment provision.
  • Proven ability to assess, plan, and implement safe and effective single-handed care solutions.
  • Strong partnership working skills with social workers, care agencies, therapists, and providers.
  • Solid understanding of least restrictive practice, independence, and safeguarding principles.
  • Excellent clinical reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and high-quality, person-centred care.
